Notes: This is my Gleekret for
asafetida who gave me a few prompts. One of them was a magical AU, and that really interested me. I don't write AUs very often, so I hope you like it, m'dear! I still made it very high school-related. I cut it into two parts because it became longer than expected, but the second part should be up soon!
Winter blankets covered each and every house in Lima. It was a flurry weekday morning, meaning that students were currently headed to school, their heads already filled with holiday cheer.
While most teenagers were walking towards the high school downtown, one of them turned to cross the street away from the others. This particular teen walked a few ways away from the nicely decorated shops and apartments, approaching the large park, which was so green and lush in the summer.
The teen shuffled in between the thick tree trunks, taking a road he knew very well which would have gotten most people lost. He soon found his way into a large clearing where a long stone building stood. He glanced at his watch and was glad to see that he was on time this morning.
This teen’s name was Finn Hudson and he went to a pretty exclusive high school in Lima called McKinley Non-Human and Magical Beings School, affectionately known as “McNhambs” by students. Creatures of all kinds went here, perhaps one of the few magical high schools in the district. The magical population wasn’t very high in Ohio, after all. Most of them seemed to move to Massachusetts or New Orleans instead.
Finn went inside, passing by a few of the witches who were on their way to homeroom, led by his fellow gleek Tina. She smiled at him and waved before disappearing round the corner. Artie the merman was in his levitating water tank as always, floating his way to class. Finn sometimes wondered how he felt, not having legs like the rest of them. Artie had found his place in Glee however, a club Finn never thought he himself would have joined and felt like he belonged.
Passing by Mercedes the were-cat who was busy sharpening her long claws, Finn finally found his group of ogre friends. The ogres were all tall and extremely strong, which was the reason that most of them were on the school’s sports teams. More than half of the school’s property damage was due to one of the ogres forgetting about the size of their herculean strength and going on a rampage.
“Hey man,” his best friend Puck sauntered over. His shaven Mohawk look made his ogre horns more visible. Finn passed a hand over his own horns, mostly hidden under his messy hair.
“ ‘Sup?” they grabbed each other’s hands and clapped backs in a firm jock greeting.
“You know who you’re asking to the winter dance yet?” Puck asked him.
Finn shuffled his large feet. He knew whom he’d like to ask; he just didn’t think he could.
A group of Cheerios fluttered by, giggling and whispering to each other. It was no surprise that the only ones let onto the cheerleading team were fairies. They were after all considered the prettiest and they could brighten the sky during evening games. It was pretty ironic considering their coach was a banshee who screeched like mad and was pretty scary to look at.
Quinn Fabray the head fairy looked at the group of ogres and smiled, showing off her pearly whites at Finn before flying away with her friends.
“I think I know who’d like to go with you,” Puck said with a raised eyebrow.
Finn shrugged, looking uncomfortable. “I don’t really want to go with her,” he said.
“Why not, dude? She’s hot! And I bet you could get some afterwards.”
“Isn’t she president of the celibacy club?” Finn asked uncertainly.
Puck snorted. “Yeah, like that makes a difference. Santana’s part of that too, and let me tell you, the things she can do with her wings – ”
“Ew, dude! Stop!” Finn said quickly, interrupting his friend’s disturbing details, “Let’s just get to class.”
First period was Elvish language class, and Finn was eager to get there early so he could pick the perfect seat just in front of the teacher’s desk. The reason being that this class was taught by Mr. Schuester who was also the head of glee club. He was an elemental wizard of nature, and a gorgeous one in Finn’s opinion. How could he not crush on his teacher and mentor?
Will wrote down the new conjugations on the board while the rest of the class settled in. He turned around and smiled at Finn, who was grinning pretty dumbly in his love struck haze.
“Your solo was great yesterday, Finn. I think your range is improving,” he said in a murmur, letting his hand brush Finn’s for a brief moment.
“Thanks, Mr. Schu,” Finn replied, trying to fight down his blush. But alas, he was a hormonal teenager and was not very good at suppressing his reactions. Especially when Will touched his hand like that, it gave him wildly hopeful impressions that he wasn’t the only one struggling with his feelings.
The rest of the class was spent concentrating less on Elvish verbs and more on Will’s nice behind moving in those not very loose pants. Puck couldn’t help but roll his eyes when he noticed the tiny bit of drool coming out of the corner of his friend’s mouth.
“Dude, no wonder you won’t ask any of the girls out,” he hissed, then added slyly, “I heard he left his wife.”
“Dude, shut up!” Finn hissed back.
“Is there a problem, guys?” Will turned from the board to look at them.
Puck tucked his hands behind his head and smirked. “There’s no real problem, Mr. Schu. Finn’s just – oof!”
Finn had elbowed him in the ribs and grinned at his teacher nervously. “I was just confused about how to conjugate the subjunkfood.”
Will raised an eyebrow. “You mean the subjunctive? Well, why didn’t you say so? Here’s how it goes…”
When the bell rang, Finn hung back until everyone else had left the room. He approached Will’s desk while the other was busy erasing the board. He had absolutely no idea what he wanted to say, but felt that he couldn’t leave without trying to tell Will how he felt without actually telling him. Did that make sense?
“What’s up, Finn?” Will was gathering his papers and putting them in his briefcase. “Are you excited about the winter dance coming up? I remember when I went in my senior year they decorated the hall with pixies and balloons with different charmed candies in them.”
“Uh… I guess so,” Finn said, losing his nerve.
Will smiled at his fidgeting, something he knew Finn did a lot. “What’s wrong? You haven’t asked anyone to the dance yet?”
Finn shook his head. The question screamed to burst forth from his lips but he pressed them firmly shut.
“What about Rachel? I think she really likes you.”
Finn thought of the imposing siren. She was a great friend and her singing was entrancing, but she was also pretty scary. He couldn’t like her anyway, because he was already in love with someone else.
“I don’t really want to ask anyone out,” he said hesitantly.
“Thinking of going solo? I’m sure a handsome guy like you could – ”
“Mr. Shu…” Finn stared at him intensely, his slow mind trying to think of the perfect words to say. He willed his teacher to understand through his eyes, knowing that he couldn’t speak; his throat felt very dry all of a sudden.
Will’s smile faded. He gazed back and fully understood what he saw in his student’s eyes. “Finn…” he said hesitantly. “I…”
Finn broke their eye contact. “I’m sorry. I… I should go. I’ll be late.” He tightened his hold on his backpack and bolted, just as all of his guts plummeted to the pit of his stomach, or at least that was what it felt like. He couldn’t face Will anymore now that his secret was out.
“Finn!”
Despite himself, Finn stopped just as he had reached the doorway. He hesitantly turned around and kept his eyes lowered to the ground.
Will bit his lip, wondering whether he should speak. He took a deep breath and slowly said, “I’m chaperoning at the dance.”
Finn finally glanced at him, spilling his hope into those words. “You… You are?”
Will nodded and walked over to him. He offered up his palm, and grew out of it a small white lily with his powers. He gave it to Finn, who took it with trembling fingers.
“Wear that with your tux,” Will told him with a smile.
“Yeah… of course, Mr. Schu,” Finn replied after a moment. One corner of his mouth lifted in a small smile, although inside he was leaping for joy.
When he left the classroom, Puck was waiting for him in the hallway. He noted Finn’s happy grin and said, “So, what happened?”
“He’s chaperoning at the dance,” Finn replied, “And he gave me this.” He showed Puck the beautiful lily he was still holding.
Puck whistled. “Damn, didn’t know Mr. Schu went for the jailbait.”
Finn shoved him, temporarily forgetting his ogre strength, and sent Puck crashing into a wall. The result was that everyone could now see what was going on inside the Vampirism for Beginners darkly covered classroom.
“Sorry!” Finn said to the livid looking teacher. Although he might have been livid because he was a vampire, it was hard to tell.
“Oh dear,” Emma Pillsbury, the angel counselor said as she walked by, “Well, I suppose Figgins can use his connections at the goblin mines to pay for the damages. We really should get ogre insurance.” She looked sternly at Finn, flapping her wings. “Please try to remember your strength, boys.”
“Sorry,” Finn said sheepishly.
Puck was still dusting off the rubble from his shoulders. “This is my new shirt, man! Be careful!”
Finn grumbled. “Why, you need to look nice for someone?”
“Actually, I do.” Finn followed Puck’s gaze to where Mercedes was approaching with her best friend. Kurt Hummel had his impeccable hair combed to perfection, letting his pointy elf ears be completely visible. He was wearing a sparkly blue shirt that matched his eyes, with some fashionable jeans and expensive-looking white leather shoes. In other words, he looked fabulous as always.
Finn frowned. “You want to ask Mercedes out? I think she might scratch your eyes out if you try.”
Puck let out a frustrated sigh. “No, you idiot! I want Kurt.”
Finn gaped. “Kurt? You like Kurt? Since when?”
Puck shrugged. His eyes were still following the little elf who was walking into the cafeteria. “I don’t know, but I think he’s just so…” He grinned as Kurt bent down to tie his shoelace, showing off his little behind. “… Cute.”
“So, when are you planning to ask him out?” Finn nudged his friend.
Puck shrugged again and shoved his hands in his pockets, a sign that he was feeling awkward. “I was kinda gonna wing it at the dance. You know, when I’m in my sexy tux and he won’t be able to say no.”
Finn shook his head. “You’re so full of it, dude.”
Puck shoved him, resulting in another giant gaping hole in the wall, this time in the school’s newspaper printing room. Jacob the swamp monster expelled his slimy secretions in terror and had to go change his underwear afterwards.
